What are dust mites and why should you combat them?

Dust mites are microscopic creatures that feed on skin flakes from humans and animals. They mainly live in mattresses, pillows, carpets, and upholstered furniture. Although they don't bite or sting, they can cause severe allergic symptoms such as sneezing, stuffy nose, shortness of breath, and eczema. Do you really want to combat dust mites? Then a thorough and structural approach is needed.

1. Wash bedding regularly at 60°C

Dust mites cannot survive temperatures above 55°C. Wash your fitted sheet, pillowcase, and duvet cover weekly at a minimum of 60°C to kill the mites. Preferably choose anti-allergy bedding that you can easily wash.

2. Use a dust mite allergy vacuum cleaner

A regular vacuum cleaner only cleans the surface. For deep cleaning of mattresses, sofas, and carpets, a special anti-dust mite vacuum cleaner is essential. The MiteMaster® MX6 and MX9 Pro from KLEINN & co.® combine:

  • A vibrating plate or dual rotating brush that loosens mites and allergens from the fibers
  • Powerful suction that removes the loosened dust
  • An H13 HEPA filter that retains 99.97% of fine particles (EN 1822)
  • A UV-C lamp and heated air for extra surface hygiene

This way, you effectively remove dust mites and allergens – directly at the source.

3. Keep humidity low (below 50%)

Dust mites love humid air. By lowering the humidity in your home to below 50%, you make the living environment unfavorable for mites. This can be done with a dehumidifier or by ventilating better, especially in the bedroom.

4. Reduce dust collectors in your home

Avoid heavy curtains, carpets, and stuffed animals in rooms where you spend a lot of time. These fabrics attract dust and are difficult to keep clean. Choose smooth surfaces and washable materials.

5. Clean mattresses and sofas thoroughly

Mattresses and upholstered furniture are true breeding grounds for dust mites. A simple vacuuming is not enough. Use a device like the MiteMaster® to regularly clean these surfaces thoroughly. Also read our blog on which technique truly tackles dust mites.

6. Ensure a clean sleeping environment

Bedrooms are often the largest source of allergens. Clean daily here with a damp cloth and ventilate well. Consider an air purifier with a HEPA filter to remove airborne allergens from the air.

7. Consider an allergy test for persistent symptoms

Do you continue to suffer from shortness of breath, itching, or eczema? Then have an allergy test done by your GP or allergist. You can read more about the symptoms here!
